What To Do After Knee Surgery

Sep 22, 2020 | Blog, Life

With my body compensating from the surgeries I had, other issues thought it was funny to throw me off. My mid back started breaking down and suddenly one day I couldn’t walk because my right knee went out. I was hurting so bad that I cried with every move I made.

I wasn’t able to get into my Dr.’s office for several days and I sat around with ice and Advil on the living room end table. I would go through tv channels to find something to watch, but after all the previous surgeries, it seemed like I watched every show there was!

I had been seeing a foot specialist for that right foot and it was acting up due to the pain in my knee! I finally got in to the surgeon and after MRI’s, I had a Meniscus tear. I once again went through surgery and he repaired the tear but also had to shave bone spurs like he did from my shoulder.

I was ready for a quick recovery like the shoulder and thought this time I had things figured out. Nope! It was as different as the rest. This time, my shin was so sensitive! I am talking like even if a cats’s tail would barely touch it, pain shot through and made me cry. I could barely touch it and pins and needle pokes squeezed around my shin.

So, the thing is this: don’t think each surgery is ever going to be the same. I talked about things you can do to help you after surgeries in earlier posts, but I really did not touch upon things to do to occupy your time. Of course the first few days after a surgery is filled with sleep and whatever they give you for pain. I suggest you faithfully take it if you can, but afterwards if you are not suppose to be doing a lot, prepare to keep yourself busy and your mind occupied!

The television is great to watch but it is important to exercise however you can because hospital visits and surgeries can weaken your body. Get some hand weights or a floor bicycle to use, depending on what kind of surgery. If it hurts and causes discomfort, don’t use them. If you are told to go to therapy, please go!

If you like reading, get a collection of books, such as The Bible or magazines, to read. There is a plethora of hand held games even on your phone to explore. A sitting tray may come in useful to play solitaire or other card games. Search card games and learn how to play new games.

This COVID makes it hard to socialize and get visits, but remember, you have a phone so don’t forget to keep phone numbers and a charger near you. Not a bad idea anyhow since many hours playing games in your phone causes the battery to die!

There is one BIG thing that I would suggest you doing and that is to PRAY. God wants to hear from you even though He already knows what you need. He just wants you to communicate with Him through prayer. Some have said they don’t know how to pray. It’s simple: just talk from your heart and thank Him, asking Him to help heal and forgive you.

I will be praying for you! I may not know you, but God does and we all need prayers! God says to love all and do what we can to help others see Him. By praying for others, we also can help drown our own aches and pains. Pray for yourselves and pray for others.
