Sweet nectar can be detected from a distance,
As a hummingbird flies through the air;
Deterred from their flying pattern,
They bee-line quickly and don’t want to share!
They scan the area for predators and thieves,
Before landing upon the solid perch;
Heads bob up and down into the feeder’s mouth,
Like they’re praising the nectar in church.
A hum from behind gives a warning,
And a fight is close at hand;
Up and down through the air,
Wings clash as their wings are fanned.
The dominant returns to its nectar,
Only to see its spot has been taken;
While it defended its food,
A distraction was a bakin.’
The pattern goes on throughout the day,
And the nectar level begins to deplete;
A tiny hummingbird comes to my window pleading;
For more of that nectar so sweet!
