God’s creation amazed me as we took our honeymoon to Hawaii. That was the very first plane ride ever! I was pretty nervous and may have squeezed my new husband’s hand a bit tight when we took off, but I eased from crushing it after we were steady in the air!
I didn’t realize I had a phobia of heights until I was up that far and off solid ground. As I looked down at the earth, I was amazed with how small everything looked. I wonder how God sees us and to Him, we are just a small dot He can see as if we are right there beside Him! From that far away He is right there among us!
I was glad we landed in Atlanta, but back up we went! It was such a long flight but breathtaking! I looked down on the different landscapes and then the ocean, which I tried to find whales but didn’t see any. We landed on the Big Island and was greeted with Hawaiian leis and warm smiles.
Our experience was just beautiful. The island offered so many things to see and places to go. We took a tour on a bus and saw the Pearl Harbor Memorial, a huge crater they use as some military base, and so many pineapple fields. And as if I didn’t get enough flying, we took a helicopter ride! That was just awesome! I freaked out a bit a few times when we would climb the side of a mountain then suddenly dip down to the other side of it! The waterfalls and landscapes were just out of my imagination.
We snorkeled and I remember being mesmerized by a sea urchin opening and closing when a fish got a bit too curious. I think I watched that for 20 minutes. The ocean life was just another of God’s creation that astounded me! We rented a car and drove up to the top of Haleakala Crater in Hana and watched the sun rise in the morning above the clouds. That was a highlight to the trip to Hana, which was very narrow and filled with side spot waterfalls and camouflage trees.
There was so much to see and the nights out were just as awesome! We went to the luau’s and enjoyed the music and dancing and the ground-smoked pork was the best. One evening we went to a restaurant called the Black Orchid that Tom Selleck owned back in 1990. I hear it is now a Waterfront Plaza. It was a very fancy restaurant and the waitress told us the only way Tom would come in was in disguise and only the staff would know he was there.
And then we headed home. First we had traveled from the main island to Maui and we had to get back to the main island by way of a smaller bumpier flight. We got to the Big Island and boarded a bigger plane. I was grateful for that until we hit turbulence and I am glad my hubby took the seat closest to the window this time! We happen to be in the first seats in line and the steward strapped down facing us. She said, “We are not usually forced to strap in.” Oh I so didn’t want to hear that and panicked a bit. I was grateful that we were able to talk a bit and that calmed my nerves. It did get bumpy and here and there it seemed the whole plane suddenly dropped a few feet. I said quite a few prayers asking for God’s forgiveness for my sins and to protect us! He did and we landed safe. We were glad to be back home and begin our lives as husband and wife!
