Working Outside Of Farming And Babysitting

Not only did I work on farms growing up, but I also worked at The Spaghetti Shop and cleaned house for a church member. My sister managed a Spaghetti Shop restaurant in Louisville off of Stony Brook Avenue for a while and for a time they were short on help so I caught a ride to work with her.

My job was mainly in the kitchen doing dishes and cleaning. She taught me a lot about what it takes to work in a restaurant and things like storing the noodles and the different ways to put the menu items together. I remember the smells of the spaghetti sauce and the huge pots they used to prepare the foods. It was a great experience and totally out of my comfort zone since at home I always chose to do the outside work.

At home, I didn’t like the inside work. I think the tomboy in me would rather be outside! There were so many of us at home that I chose the outdoor jobs. My job was working the garden, chopping wood and keeping the stove hot, trimming grapes and trees, and cutting grass. We had a push mower then and I recall a few times seeing snakes but the one I will never forget is the one that I ran over and it wrapped itself around my ankle. I did not hurt that black racer but it traumatized me and I went a screaming! After that, my eyes kept better watch for snakes.

The job in the restaurant and cleaning that house gave me a better idea on different jobs. Of course I helped with inside work but working for someone else with different expectations was something different. The lady I cleaned for has since past on, but I will always appreciate her for her kindness and help. These opportunities were another way God worked to guide my path and I thank Him for every moment!
